I sat down to type this post on the winter Solstice, but as seems to happen far too often, I was sidetracked by other things. So, to begin, very belated Solstice blessings to those who celebrate.
For the winter season, I’m focusing on a theme of Rise and Shine. There is the very literal interpretation as it relates to the season – the return of the sun and the lengthening hours of day light. There is also a more personal view of the theme – overcoming obstacles (rise) and becoming the best possible version of myself (shine).
As I move through the season, I am trying to look at things through this lens. What obstacles are standing in my way? Am I creating my own road-blocks? Is someone else throwing up barriers and, if so, why am I allowing them to do so? More importantly, how can I bypass, overcome, or summit these obstacles? What can I do to improve and become that best self?
I am just beginning to formulate answers to these questions and figure out what steps to need to be taken. One area that I know needs improvement is my health. I have been less than mindful about health issues the last few months and am feeling the impacts from it. So, I have borrowed an idea from a friend – creating SMART goals for health-related activities and grading my progress via a tracking spreadsheet. The grading system works well for me; I can see at a glance where I’m doing well and where I need to make more effort. For example, I am currently acing my meditation goal (A+) while crashing and burning on my goal of 7.5 hours of sleep per night (F as in go the F to sleep already).
There are other areas that need work, but it’s a decent start toward removing those obstacles. So what about you? How are you going to rise and shine this season?
